The Cape Wrath Trail is one of the most remote long-distance hikes in the UK, and figuring out where to sleep along the way can feel pretty daunting. You will have a tent, of course – wild camping is unavoidable on this trail, regardless of the route you choose – but what if you are looking for a bit of comfort, or even just a shower?
Accommodation and campsite options are sparse in comparison to trails like the West Highland Way, but there are more options than you might expect. This guide pulls together the realistic accommodation options along the trail. It’s designed to help you get an idea of where you can weave in a bit of comfort.
In this guide:
Should I book in advance?
I honestly don’t recommend booking all your accommodation up front. The trail is long enough, and there are enough variables that can cause you to change your plans that it’s not really that viable. Having said that, Scotland can be a tourist hotspot in the summer, so it’s unlikely to find a spot anywhere by just rocking up and asking unless it’s a large hostel or a campsite.
If you want to stay somewhere, I recommend looking a few days in advance and booking your option. If you are not comfortable with this, there are enough campsites that you can generally have a shower etc., without ever having to book accommodation.
Accommodation Types and Pricing
While there are many nights you won’t be able to find accommodation, there are a variety of options dotted along the Cape Wrath Trail. Whether you’re looking for a campsite, keeping it simple in a hostel, or seeking a cosy bed and breakfast after a long day’s walk, there’s something to suit every budget and style.

Practical Notes & Variables
Seasonality: Prices tend to rise and availability fall in the high season (May‑September) compared to shoulder seasons.
Group vs solo: Shared dorms are the cheapest per person, while private rooms obviously cost more. If you are in a group you have the option to book e.g. family rooms and split the cost. Some places may offer a single occupancy rate for double/twin rooms.
Booking direct: Booking direct with the accommodation is often slightly cheaper than booking via websites like booking.com

Solo travelling can be expensive – price per person per night is not necessarily indicative of what is the most affordable option for one person. For that reason I have also indicated the cheapest option for solo travellers per stage with a 💵

Final Thoughts
One of the things I appreciated most on the Cape Wrath Trail was having options. Some nights that meant a campsite and a shower, others it meant pushing on or adjusting plans entirely. Hopefully this guide helps you understand where those options exist, so you are informed and can make decisions on the trail as and when you need to.
